Facts about Hospice of McDowell County Hospice of McDowell County, Inc. began as dream of a handful of community volunteers in 1993. This group hired the Executive Director in 1994 and began the long, arduous mission of developing a ministry through Hospice guidelines. This ministry has grown to what is now a thriving tradition serving the needs of the family's facing life-threatening illnesses. Hospice of McDowell County admitted the first patient in 1994 with two staff members and a number of volunteers. The first nurses for Hospice of McDowell County, Inc. were on loan from the McDowell Hospital. In 2005 Hospice of McDowell County admitted 149 patients, including 27 patients in Nursing Homes, and averaged 42 patients per day, (highest in the organizations history), with a median length of stay of 40 days. This means that 20 of the patients admitted to Hospice care died within the first 40 days of their admission. By Diagnosis 45% of the admissions had a Cancer related diagnosis, while 55% were non-cancer related, such as ALS, Stroke/CVA, Liver Disease, End Stage Renal Disease, End Stage Heart Disease and Dementia/Alzheimer's. Our commitment is to stand side-by-side with our neighbors to face head-on the challenges of hospice & palliative care in McDowell County. |
