Hospice of McDowell County offers an initial, free consultation to explain our services and discuss any questions that you or your family may have. There is no obligation to accept hospice services, after our free consultation, you may think about whether hospice services is right for you or your loved one.

With the permission of the patient, family members and close friends may call to request more information about hospice services.

Hospice serves not only cancer patients, but many different terminally ill diagnosis, such as the following potential admitting diagnosis:

Heart Disease
Pulmonary Disease
Dementia
HIV Disease (AIDS)
Liver Disease
Renal Disease (Kidney)
Stroke and Coma
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Admission Standards

Hospice of McDowell County, Inc., offers care, comfort and support to persons with a limited life expectancy and to their families, regardless of diagnosis, age, gender, nationality, race, creed, sexual orientation, disability, or ability to pay. These services are offered based on the following standards.

1. The patient shall have a limited life expectancy with the anticipated prognosis determined by the physician to be six months or less, and patient and/or family have been informed of this.

2. The patient shall designate an attending physician who is willing to work with the Hospice team. The physician may practice outside the service area.

3. The patient is receiving palliative rather than curative treatment and/or family have elected intervention goals of a palliative nature.

4. There is documented clinical advancement of terminal illness and/or documented nutritional decline related to the disease or terminal illness.

5. The patient should have a responsible caregiver or agree to develop an alternate plan of care consistent with the patient’s safety and needs and in compliance with Hospice standards of care.

6. The patient shall have equal access to Hospice services regardless of his or her designated place of residence, including licensed facilities willing to work with the Hospice team.

7. Admission to the Hospice program shall be available within 48 hours, seven days a week.
